چکیده

Variations in the concentration of calcium in the haemolymph and of total body calcium in Austropotamobius pallipes have been investigated. Haemolymph calcium concentration was independent of both body size and sex. During premoult the calcium concentration of the haemolymph rose from 11-8 ITIM/1 to 15-0 HIM/I. After the moult the calcium concentration remained high during stages A and B but declined to the intermoult level during stage C. Total body calcium was directly proportional to fresh body weight. No difference was apparent between calcium content of male and female crayfish of similar body weight.

Calcium balance at the postmoult stage of the freshwater crayfish Austropotamobius pallipes (Lereboullet).

Net uptake of calcium by Austropotamobius begins 15-30 min after the moult and rapidly reaches a maximum level (2 /imoles/g/h at io°C) which is maintained throughout stages A and B. At stage Cx the rate of net uptake falls sharply to a lower level which is gradually reduced until equilibrium is reached at C4. The uptake mechanism is near-saturated at 0-4 mM-Ca/1 and half-saturated at 0-13 mM-Ca...

The Regulation of Haemocyanin Oxygen Affinity during Emersion of the Crayfish Austropotamobius Pallipes I. an in Vitro Investigation of the Interactive Effects of Calcium and L-lactate on Oxygen Affinity

The haemolymph of the crayfish Austropotamobius pallipes exhibits a high affinity for oxygen (P50 = 2-7 Torr at pH7-9 and 15°C) and a modest Bohr effect (<p = —0-455). The affinity of haemolymph dialysed against a crayfish Ringer was lower with a P50 value of 6 4 Torr at the same temperature and pH. The oxygen affinity of the dialysed haemolymph can be increased markedly by increased concentrat...

The Regulation of Haemocyanin Oxygen Affinity during Emersion of the Crayfish Austropotamobius Pallipes Ii. an Investigation of in Vivo Changes in Oxygen Affinity

The oxygen-transporting properties of the haemolymph from the crayfish Austropotamobius pallipes were investigated. The haemolymph concentrations of K, Mg^ and Ca ions, together with the concentration of L-lactate were measured in crayfish before, during and after 24 h emersion. The concentrations of K and Mg"" increased during aerial exposure and returned to pre-emersion levels during immersed...

Calcium balance at the premoult stage of the freshwater crayfish Austropotamobus pallipes (Lereboullet).

The premoult stage in Austropotamobtus pallipes is characterized by a net loss of calcium which increases from Do to a maximum of 0-83 /imoles/g/h at D4. The concentration of ionized calcium in the haemolymph does not increase during the premoult stage although there is an increase in complexed calcium. The electrochemical gradient across the body surface is similar to that at the intermoult st...

The electrical potential difference across the epithelium of isolated gills of the crayfish Austropotamobius pallipes (Lereboullet).

There has been a considerable amount of work on the electrical potential differences and active transport processes of ions across various vertebrate epithelia (Ussing, i960). Little work of this type has been attempted on invertebrate material. As the crustacean gill epithelium has only a single layer of cells separating the body fluid and the external medium, it should be particularly suitabl...
